Husbands Rate High
Husbands rate highly in the esteem of the newly-appointed Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides, Mrs W. G. Turnbull, of Wellington, who is on her first official visit to Christchurch.
Most of New Zealand’s guide leaders are married women and without the cooperation of their husbands they would not be able to carry on. Good husbands were half the battle, said Mrs Turnbull.
‘They are very important, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.” she added. Mrs Turnbull said yesterday that she had thoroughly enjoyed her first 14 days of office and she knew her job was going to continue to be tremendously interesting and demanding. During her first year she intends to travel extensively to meet guides all over the country. Because the Dominion headquarters are
in Christchurch. Mrs Turnbull expects to make frequent visits. Mrs Turnbull has been associated with the movement for 25 years. “It is a grand movement Children are so rewarding to work with, and there are such nice people in it. Guilding is voluntary and this makes a tremendous difference,” she said. Mrs Turnbull wishes to further the movement and to continue the work of streamlining it to fit modern times and the teen-age girl. “The teen-age girl is more independent and experiences wider spheres more quickly today. We are providing a more attractive uniform and increasing extra-curricular activities which will run alongside the senior guide programme,” she said. “We must also play our part in world guiding. We are committed to helping the movement in the underdeveloped countries of Africa and Asia.”
Guides, because they were non-political and non-denom-inational, were regarded as
friends in these countries which often looked upon the West with suspicion. “We are concerned with the children and training them through enjoyment" she said
