Maunsell Batters Way To T.K.O. Win In 7th
Brian Maunsell (Christchurch) scored his third win in three professional fights when he methodically battered the Melbourne boxer, Brian Larsen, to gain a seventh round technical knock-out in a catch-weight contest at Canterbury Court last evening.
Maunsell (9st JHlb) used hard straight lefts, vicious left and right hooks and rips, and a sledge hammer right cross to punch Larsen (Ost 91b) into submission.
Maunsell took £l2O for his win. Larsen, outboxed. and out-punched, took £BO, a good hiding and the applause of a sporting crowd for his gameness in lasting nearly seven of the scheduled 10 rounds.
Using superior footwork. Maunsell had a vastly greater range of punches and was well ahead on points when the referee (Mr N. Fisher) sensibly stepped in and stopped the bout shortly after the only knock-down of the bout. Larsen was out-punched and outpointed in every round. Decreasing Power
Larsen’s punching dei creased in power as the bout I went on. He seldom used his right. His left was comparatively straight in the first two or three rounds, but when Maunsell began to really thump Larsen in the fourth round the Australian relied on swinging left cuffs to Maunsell’s ear whenever Maunsell missed with his right cross. The trend that the bout was
to take began in the first round when Maunsell scored with left crosses, which opened a small cut above Larsen's right eye. and strong right hooks to the head. In the next round Maunsell continually found gaps in Larsen’s defence and he peppered the Australian’s face with lefts. Larsen landed his first effective punch—a left to Maunsell's eye. The next two rounds continued in the same vein and by the end of the fourth Maunsell’s power-packed hooks had opened cuts above both Larsen’s eyes. Australian’s Courage Larsen was fighting on the retreat as he sought to cut off the stream of blows. He scored occasionally with left cuffs to Maunsell's right ear.
Maunsell had Larsen staggering in the fifth and sixth rounds but he could not lower the gallant Australian. Larsen could offer little resistance and only his courage and effective covering-up kept him on his feet. Maunsell finally knocked down Larsen midway through the seventh round when he landed two punishing right crosses to Larsen’s head. At first it appeared that he would be counted out but he sprang up as Mr Fisher reached eight. However, Maunsell bored in. forcing Larsen against the ropes, and peppered him with both fists. Mr Fisher stepped in as Larsen rolled helplessly against the ropes. The judges were Messrs D. Simson, M. V. Drury and C. Wellman.
