Short Story Award To Frank Sargeson

The Katherine Mansfield Memorial Award for 1965 has been won by the short story writer, Frank Sargeson. The award was announced yesterday by Mr J. D. G. Duncan, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand.

The prize of lOOgns, awarded for the best published literary work written by a New Zealander within the last two years, is sponsored by the Bank of New Zealand and the New Zealand Woman Writers' Society. The judge, Dr. R. A. Copland, a senior lecturer in English at the University of Canterbury, considered Mr Sargeson’s realistic comic satire, “Just Trespassing Thanks,”

well merited the award. Previous winners have included Elsie Locke, Maurice Duggan, C. K. Stead and Maurice Shadbolt.

Mr Sargeson. who was born in Hamilton in 1903, is one of New Zealand’s best-known short story writers. He is a qualified solicitor. In 1951 he received the Hubert Church Award for his work, “Up On to the Roof and Down Again." His writing is notable for its freshness and originality, observation and technical skill. His other work includes “A Man and His Wife," “That Summer,” “I Saw in My Dream,” and “Memoirs of a Peon,” which has just been published.
