Prison Officers To Get Pay Increase

WELLINGTON, October 14.
Under a new salary scale for prison staff, officers will be recruited on a salary of £9OO a year, compared with £B4l previouslv
The scale was announced today in a statement by the chairman of the State Ser vices Commission (Mr L. Atkinson).
He said that under the old scale the salary of officers could rise to £959 a year without passing an examination.
Under the new scale thev could reach £lOOO or in certain cases £lO4O. They would also receive approximately £l4O a year in penal payments for working shifts spread over seven days. A rise of £ll6 a year for
first officers has also been approved, bringing their total remuneration to £1650 a year, and rises in the maximum salaries for prison superintendents from £5O to £125.
Mr Atkinson said that until representations were made after the prison disturbances in July, there had only been one application in recent years for increased salaries. This had been made by the Public Service Association and was withdrawn in April, 1964, after some improvements were made.
