LYTTELTON MAYOR
Final Votes A Tie
The Town Clerk of Lyttelton (Mr J. Thompson) would not give any figures for the mayoralty or the council election last evening, but it is believed that the official count for the mayoralty has resulted in a tie between the sitting Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett) and his Labour opponent and former Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs). On the Saturdaj’-night count Mr Briggs received 737 votes to Mr Collett’s 682, but the position is now thought to be 773-all. Mr Thompson, as returning officer, would only say last evening: “I have nothing to tell you. The official count has not been completed. I will let you know when it is.” If the result is a tie, Mr Thompson will have to “determine by lot” which candidate shall be elected. That is the provision of the Local Election and Polls Act, 1953. After he has done so. the unsuccessful candidate may apply for a magisterial recount of the votes, accompanying the application with a £lO deposit.
