Ellesmere Reaches Dominion Final
The Ellesmere Young Farmers’ Club has reached the Dominion final of the Young Farmers’ Clubs’ debating contest. The national final will be held at Blenheim late this month.
Last week, in Dunedin, the Ellesmere team, Messrs R. F. Gilbert, R. D. Russell and K. A. Gilbert, defeated the West Taierj Young Farmers’ Club, from the Otago-Southland council area in the South Island final, by 272 points to 260.
The subject was “that New Zealand has neglected its island territories.” The Ellesmere club took the affirmative.
For the first time at a South Island final there was a panel of three judges. They were Messrs G. G. McLeod, rector of the South Otago High School, T. W. Fogarty, a Dunedin solicitor, and G. G. Curran, of the N.Z.B.C. Mr Keith Gilbert, of Ellesmere, was selected as the best speaker.
In the national final Ellesmere, representing the Canterbury council area, will debate against the Oruru club, from near Kaitaia representing the northern council. The subject is “that the production targets set by the agricultural development conference are attainable. Ellesmere will take the negative.
