Extra Lanes May Improve Bridge
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 11. The addition of four extra lanes to the existing Auckland harbour bridge will not spoil its appearance, and might even improve it, according to the man who designed the bridge, Sir Gilbert Roberts.
A partner of Freeman, Fox and Partners, Sir Gilbert Roberts, is in Auckland to study the listed firms to be invited In two or three weeks to tender for the project. He agreed on Saturday that the firm did not usually go about bridge building in the way dictated by New Zealand's financial position. "1 don't recollect anything like this being done before.” he said. “What they do in the States is to build another one.”
But an identical bridge beIside the existing one would look “terrible”—and be £2 i million more expensive. The scheme to add two lanes on each side of the [bridge was technically quite j sound—“A difficult engineerI ing job. but on the other hand [it saves the complete cost of I piers: about two or three mil- ' lion pounds." A one-sided extension i would not be sound engineering. In the event of an earthquake the whole bridge could go over.
