Contenders For Aria Prize
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright; MELBOURNE. Oct 5. New Zealand has two strong contenders for Australia’s richest vocal event the Melbourne “Sun” aria contest, elimination heats of which began at Ballarat last night. The New Zealanders are Kiri Te Kanawa and Lynne Cantion of Auckland.
Kiri Te Kanawa sang last night and the “Sun” music critic, Miss Linda Phillips, said of her: “Agathe’s aria from ‘Der Freichutz’ by Weber was chosen by Kiri Te Kanawa. “The soft opening phrases were beautifully sung and the mood changes well expressed. The voice has rich qualities.” Miss Phillips is one of the judges for the semi-finals and final. The winner of the aria will receive £NZ449 8s and a silver trophy and is eligible for the “Sun” aria scholarship valued at a minimum of £NZIOSO. Eighty-one singers are competing and eight will take part in the final in Melbourne next Monday night. Last year a New Zealander, Malvina Major, of Hamilton, won the aria.
