Sea Bird Brilliant In Longchamp Win
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS. The Epsom Derby winner, Sea Bird, ridden by the Australian jockey, R. Glennon, won the Prix de L’Arc De Triomphe, Europe's richest race, easily at Longchamp on Sunday. The three-year-old spearheaded a tremendous Gallic triumph in the six-nation field. French horses were second (Reliance), third (Diatome) and fourth (Free Ride), with the Russian horse, Anilin, fifth, the leading overseas finisher. Sea Bird’s victory over the mile and a half gained his owner, Mr J. Ternvnck, prize money of about £73.920. The win makes the horse one of the leading European colts of the century. Glennon 'took Sea Bird to the front soon after the field swung into the final straight. Y. SaintMartin pulled out in pursuit on the French Derby winner. Reliance. but Sea Bird, although veering to the left close to home, raced on to an impressive victory. Well behind the leading pair. Diatome beat Free Ride by a head for third place in the
field of 20. Anilin. ridden by N Nasibov, was half a length behind Free Ride, fifth, with Tom Rolfe, the leading American three-year-old. sixth. Meadow Court, the Irish Derby winner, ridden by L. Piggott, was ninth. Sea Bird, the favourite at 6 to 5, was having his last race. He is bound for stud in the United States. Sea Bird ends his career with only one defeat—as an early two-year-old.
