Proposed Hydro Scheme Attacked
The proposal to flood the Cromwell gorge in Central Otago for the production of electricity was criticised at a meeting of the South Island Publicity Association in Christchurch yesterday.
An officer of the Otago Development Council, Mr A. O. Davies, said that if the
gorge were flooded 20 per cent of its arable land would be lost for ever.
He said that; an utterly confusing series of reports about the Government’s proposals for another dam on the Clutha river at Cromwell had alarmed his council and the people in the area concerned. Seven statements, each contradicting the other, had been printed in the newspapers and broadcast over the radio. “No-one knows which one is right,” he said. Another member said that New Zealand could ill afford to have its productive and picturesque land flooded. With the coming of atomic power to generate electricity it was doubtful whether the expansion of such hydro schemes was necessary. The association agrees to oppose any move to go ahead with the scheme.
