AWARD FOR BRAVERY

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21. The Queen’s Commendation for brave conduct has been awarded to Mr Donald William Jones, of Linden, the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) announced today. The award was made in recognition of Mr Jones’s gallant services during rescue operations when three boys were trapped in a water main tunnel at Khandallah on the evening of Sunday, June 14, 1964. The tunnel tragedy claimed the lives of two teen-age boys and of Senior Ambulance Officer S. E. Barlow, of Johnsonville. Mr Jones was the first man into the tunnel after it was reported that the boys were trapped.
