FREEZING SPACE
Report Of Talks
Concern that a report of discussions at a meeting of the meat and wool section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers might have given the wrong impression was expressed by the chairman of the section, Mr W. N. Dunlop. He said that certain matters needed to be seen in their right perspective. Mr Dunlop said that there had been a discussion about freezing space when the potential of Canterbury’s light land was realised. At that stage it was apparent that much more killing space would be needed, and. with a shorter killing season, under these circumstances
farmers could be faced with comparatively higher killing charges. The reverse was true today in that at present the Canterbury works had a higher number of days at full capacity than works in other South Island areas.
On the matter of freezing company costs, Mr Dunlop said that the discussion had centred around the necessity for these figures to be made available to the Meat Board, not to individual farmers, who had made no approach to obtain them.
Killing charges in Canterbury had been quoted at 3.17 d per lb, not 3s id a head as reported.
