NEGLECT OF CHILD

Couple Sent To Gaol (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. Sept. 20. “It was suggested during the hearing that your dogs had better conditions than this child,” Mr G. J. Donne, S.M.. said in the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court today when sending to pritfcn Philip •John Maddern. aged 58. a workman, and Ramona Myrtle Ellen Maddern, aged 32. both of Rotoiti, on a charge of wilfully neglecting a 15-vear-old boy in a manner likely to endanger his health. Philip Maddern was sent to prison for four months and Ramona Maddern for six weeks.

The pair pleaded not guiltv at an earlier hearing, through Mr R. A. Potter, but were convicted and remanded for sentence until today. At the hearing Detective Senior-Sergeant J. F. Stevenson, prosecuting, said that the boy, the son of Ramona Maddem, was often locked in a room- which had neither lining nor ceiling. The boy. it was stated by a medical witness, was retarded and “would be a problem."
