Placegetters in each of the five classes will get prizes of £65, £2O and £lO in the challenge race, and £lOO and trophy, £3O and £2O in the sixhour event.. There will be prizes for women drivers and for teams of three. £5O in each case in each event, and a
prize of £25 for the mechanics of the “first-home” car in each event.
In the six-hour race there will be a special award called the Index of Price. This relates the performance of each car to its price under a formula which divides the average speed of the car by 64 plus .011 of its price. The formula was evolved originally for “The Motor” six-hour race in Britain, on which the Wills event is based, and has been confirmed as the best method of measuring “value for money” in terms of performance.
Last year more than 15,000 Auckland people and visitors
;fwent to Pukekohe for the i Wills six-hour race, and in 1963, the first year of the . event, there were more than 12,000. On October 9, the date of this year’s race the organisers will prepare for a crowd of 20,000 through the day. The new pattern of two races is expected to draw two types of spectator, the motor sport fans for the three-hour race and the family spectator for the six-hour one, making ■ it both an afternoon and evening entertainment. The promoters are also > negotiating for a fairground site which will probably be 'available as an added attraction for children.
