CITY BUYS SECTION

County Land Affected

' When City Council buying of Waimairi beach sections was discussed last night by the Waimairi County Council, the Clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) said that of 57 private properties in which it was interested, the city had bought 27. had five more sales almost completed, and another five sections under renewed offers. The finance committee’s report quoted Cr. A. A. Adcock as saying at its meeting that the city was buying up property in the plantation area on the ground that it was needed for fire protection, and that owners had been told that if they would not sell, the Public Works Act would be invoked. Cr. Adcock said he was concerned that if Waimairi, at some future time, wished to develop the beach for residential purposes, it would be prevented from doing so by the city purchases. “If anyone else should own this land, it should be Waimairi.” Cr. Adcock told i the council.

On his motion, the council expressed “grave concern” at City Council encroachment on beach land, in the Styx riding. and agreed to give consideration to buying from anyone who wishes to sell.
