Fresh Ammunition For N.Z.

TN spite <rf requests by New Zealand, the International Rugby Board has refused firmly to consider injured players being replaced in matches played against international teams. The farcical situation which developed at Auckland last week when the New Zealand Universities team had only 12 men for most of the second half may at least provide some fresh ammunition for the New Zealand delegates at the next meeting of the board and perhaps Dr. D. H. Craven, South Africa’s dele-

gate, will be more sympathetic to New Zealand’s views now. The Home Unions, which comprise the majority on the board, apparently consider that if replacements were allowed there would be the possibility that some teams would cheat by bringing in fresh players or replacing a player who was not playing well—a sad commentary on the players, and a sport that is supposed to be truly amateur. It has been emphasised many times that Rugby is a game for 15 players. The Universities-Springboks match disproved that contention.
