Canterbury Women Win Basketball Match

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 6. Wellington and Canterbury have emerged as favourites in the A grade section of the New Zealand women’s indoor basketball championships, which started at the Surrey park stadium, Invercargill, today. In the highlight game tonight, Wellington beat a struggling Auckland side. 44-31. Wellington took an early lead and held it to the end, using long set shots to advantage. Auckland’s penetrative tactics were almost useless against an impregnable defence. Auckland defended poorly. Earlier, Canterbury turned on a polished display to beat a weaker Wairarapa team, 65-37.

In the reserve section, Southland and Hamilton look as if they will take command. Results were:— A grade: Wellington 47,

Otago 38; Canterbury 65, Wairarapa 37; Nelson 38, Hutt Valley 36; Wellington 44, Auckland 31. Reserve A grade: Hamilton 46, Hawera 12; Eastern Southland 50, Feilding 34: Southland 49, Tauranga 33; Taranaki 35, Hawera 22.
