Obituary MR J. A. WHITE
“The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, September 3. Mr John Ashely White, who died at Dunedin on Wednesday, was a well-known racing personality. As a trainer and an owner he raced with success gs far north as Trentbam.
Mr White was born in Dunedin and was the youngest of a Southland family. His father was a prominent owner. Mr White was attached as a youth to the stables of two of his brothers-in-law, J. McCoombre and R. D. O’Donnell, who was private trainer to Mr G. G. Stead, at Yaldhurst. In his early 20’s, Mr White was appointed private trainer to Mr W. T. Hazlett at Invercargill and later held a similar position with Mr L. C. Hazlett at North TaierL During these periods many top-class gallopers passed through his hands. Mr White trained Lord Nuffield to win a C.J.C. Stewards’ and a Members’ Handicap and The Joker to win a Wellington Cup and a C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. Mr White’s services as a horse dentist and veterinary adviser were keenly sought when veterinary surgeons were scarce in the Taieri district
He was timekeeper for the Forbury Park Trotting Club, the Dunedin Jockey Club and the Otago Hunt Club for many years. His son, Mr J. A. White, was handicapper in Otago and Southland for most of 20 years and his grandson, Mr R. J. White, has succeeded him as time-keeper for the Dunedin Jockey Club and the Otago Hunt Club.
He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
