SECOND XI CRICKET
New Series Planned
A "long-range” plan to organise a second eleven series along the lines of the Plunket Shield competition was made to the New Zealand Cricket Council’s board of control by the chairman (Mr J. L. Kerr) last evening. Mr Kerr said that the present Rothman’s under 23 tournament was not completely fulfilling the requirements of being a stepping stone to the Plunket Shield and suggested a type of knockout competition in which each team from the six major associations would have at least two games. Mr Kerr was supported by Mr I. M. Hamilton (Southern Minors) who felt such a competition would serve a better pur pose than B team tours. Rothman's Tournament A Northern Districts move for the age limit of the Rothman’s tournament to be lowered to under 21 years—with a view to amalgamating it with the Brabin (under 20) tournament—met with no support. An Auckland proposal for new balls to be allowed on the same basis as in Plunket Shield matches was carried, six votes to four.
The Auckland representative. Mr G. C. Burgess, said the slight extra cost likely was not significant.
It was decided bn the casting vote of Mr Kerr that the principle of uncovered wickets at the tournament—the status quo—be adhered to.
