Final Classes Judged In Ashburton Competition
Lynne Esplin, of Christchurch, won the New Zealand championship Reel O’Tulloch for competitors under 18 years at the Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival yesterday. The class was keenly contested. Miss Esplin gpined 88 points, her nearest rivals being Mary Lemon (Dunedin) 87. and Leta Herron (Oamaru) 86.
The South Island championship Irish Hornpipe, under 16 years, was won by lola Smith, and the North Canterbury championship sailor’s hornpipe, under 10, was won by Penelope Thomson of Christchurch.
Judging of the 433 classes in the competitions, which has continued all this week, was completed last evening, and the festival will end today with demonstration concerts this afternoon and evening. The competitions have been most successful, and judges generally have been full of praise of the high standard achieved by entrants in the wide variety of classes held during the week. There was a large number of very talented performances, and a commendable feature was the standard of competitors in the younger age groups.
The leading competitors will appear in the two demonstration concerts today, and bookings for the evening performance have been particularly heavy. The concerts will include about 40 top items at each performance. Prizes will be presented during these programmes, the main presentations being made in the evening. Although Ashburton, Timaru and Christchurch competitors have, naturally, gained most placings during the week, many performers from much further afield have been well rewarded for their enthusiasm. Patricia and Leanne Downie. of Auckland, and Raewyn Whipp, of Invercargill, have figured prominently in events in the dancing section.
