FORMER S.S. MEN
Death Camp Trial (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright! DUESSELDORF, Sept 3. A Duesseldorf Court today sentenced four former S.S. men to hard labour for life for their role in the murder of 700,000 Jews at the Treblinka death camp, in Poland.
Five other former camp guards were sentenced to hard labour terms ranging from three to 12 years and a tenth was acquitted. Sentenced to life imprisonment was Kurt Hubert Franz, aged 51, the camp commandant, now a cook, known to prisoners as “The Doll." He was alleged to have shot prisoners as they’ arrived at the camp, to have shot, hung and beaten other inmates to death and also to have set his dog on to inmates to tear them to bits.
He was also alleged to have hung five prisoners upside down until they died and to have killed about 350 at one time with a machine pistol.
