NEW ART GALLERY
More Money Needed The Canterbury Society of Arts needs more money for its new Gloucester street art gallery. A building fund opened two years ago totals almost £3OOO, but up to £lO,OOO may be needed, says the society’s September newsletter. “The £3OOO in the building fund is wonderful evidence of members’ interest, but we will have to furnish the new gallery, cover floors, and pay various professional fees which in total may well amount to £10,000,” the newsletter says. “How wonderful it would be if the society were to receive some really generous gifts,” says the newsletter. “Donors would have the satisfaction of knowing that a really worth-while civic project had been helped.” On details of the new gallery, the society says that it needs hanging space not less than in the Durham street gallery, plus one or two small rooms for one-man shows, or for hanging selections from its permanent collection.
“We must have proper office accommodation, catering facilities, cloakrooms, storage rooms, and perhaps a members’ room which can be used also for council meetings and a library,” says the society. “Above all, however, we must have a modern gallery, properly lighted and really attractive—a credit to Christchurch.
“Let us hope that enough money will be available to complete it now, rather than that we »,ill be obliged to build in stages over a number of years because of insufficient funds.”
