WINTER WOOL SALE
Average Price 39.135 d per lb
The average price per lb for wool at the first sale in Christchurch last week for the 1965-66 season was 39.135 d, which was almost 8d less than at the corresponding sale in August last year. This is a drop of about 17 per eent.
The average for the last sale of last season held in Christchurch in April was 39.765 d per lb, but it has to be remembered that last week’s sale was a winter auction with a much higher with a much bigger proportion of crutchings to fleece, which has the effect of reducing the average compared with a normal main sale.
The average price a bale last week was £54 3s lOd, compared with £63 16s 5d a year ago. Total proceeds of the auction amounted to £802,181 14s 7d, compared with £873,272 8s lOd, the effect of the lower price per lb being offset to some extent by the increased weight of wool sold—almost 0.5 m lb more. The weight of wool sold last week was 4,919,5181 b against 4,448,2731 b in August last year. A total of 14,803 bales were sold compared with 13.683 at the same sale last year.
