YACHTSMEN ANNOYED

Reference To “Incompetent”

The Canterbury Yachting Association told the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday that it was concerned about the possible effect of publicity given to a board member’s comment that “there were enough incompetent yachtsmen sailing on Lyttelton harbour already.” The association said all yacht clubs in Canterbury provided their own rescue facilities and that in other centres harbour boards actively encouraged the sport of yachting, giving every assistance to their local yacht clubs.

“They have got small boats and yachts mixed up,” Mr F. I. Sutton said. “When the remarks were made they referred to runabout launches and not yachts. “The yachting clubs do wonderful work in Lyttelton. It is not them we are worried about, it is those who do not belong to clubs but who bring their runabouts on to the harbour.”
