ASSAULT LED TO DESERTION. CHARGE

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Sept. 1. Police who arrested Charles Edwards Griffin last night for having assaulted his wife found that he was a former seaman who had deserted at Lyttelton 15 years ago. Griffin, a 44-year-old fitter, was convicted and ordered to pay costs on the assault charge and was remanded until Friday on the charge of desertion when he appeared before Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., today. Senior - Sergeant R. M. Schwass said Griffin’s wife had called at the Central Police Station last night complaining that her husband had assaulted her.

She was in a very distressed condition and had red marks on her neck. The two had been arguing since 4.30 p.m., she told the police. It culminated in the assault when Griffin told her to prepare him a cooked meal or “murder would be done.” Griffin was arrested soon after 8 p.m., when it was found that he had deserted from the Raeonga in Lyttelton in 1950. He admitted this, Senior-Sergeant Schwass said. Mr G. A. Howley, for Griffin, applied for bail on the grounds that his client, now married, with four children, had been employed in the city for several years. Bail was granted.
