Lady Carroll Dead

(N.Z. Press Association) WAIROA, Sept. 1. The body of Lady Carroll, wife of Sir Turi Carroll, chairman of the Maori Council, was recovered from the Wairoa river in Turiroa near the Carroll homestead about 2 p.m. today.

Lady Carroll had been missing from her home since 7.30 this morning. Lady Carroll was widely known and respected throughout New Zealand. She married Sir Turi Carroll in 1922. Their daughter, Mrs R. Paku, lives at Huramua, the Carroll homestead. The body of Lady Carroll will lie at the Taihoa Marae tomorrow morning until the funeral service and burial at Huramua on Saturday morning. In the death of Lady Carroll the Maori people had lost one who was widely regarded and much loved as a mother to the Maori people, particularly in her own Wairoa district, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight. The Maori people and many pakehas would share with Sir Turi Carroll in his mourning the loss of a loved one, said the Prime Minister. Mr Holyoake sent the following telegram to Sir Turi Carroll:

“1 am shocked to hear of your terrible bereavement. Lady Polly will always have a very special place in the affection of all who knew her. Her serenity, never-failing kindliness, and saintly qualities inspired all who knew her. May God bless and sustain you. Arohanui.”
