High Standard In Speech Classes At Competitions
The standard produced by young competitors in classes in the art of speech section was commended by the judge (Mrs N Russell, of Hawera) at the third day of the Ashburton Competitions Society’s festival yesterday.
Particular mention was made of the reading at sight class for children eight and under 10 years. Marie Kenny, of Ashburton, won the event with 82 points, particularly high marks for this age group Joanne Flaherty, of Ashburton, was second with 79 points, and Paul Muir and Alexis Hurley, both Ashburton, were third equal with 77 points. All 16 competitors in this class had given very pleasing displays. Mrs Russell said.
Notable amongst the other 51 classes decided at yesterday’s session was the piano duet, under 14, which was won by Leighton Brown and John Caygill, of Christchurch with 94 points—the highest awarded in the vocal and instrumental section. Glenis Jones and Brian Jones (Timaru) were second with 88 points followed closely by Craig Hampton and Margaret Binns 'Ashburton) 87 points.
