The Estuary

Sir, —If they intend to dig out the Estuary, why not build a dam across the Heathcote river at the Heathcote bridge? That would do away with the need for a new bridge. Change the course of the river to come out past the fire station, put some kind of a floodgate at the Estuary, and control the water level back into Woolstoi. and Opawa. Put a suction dredge in the Estuary and fill up the old Heathcote river and raise the level of a lot of the surrounding land. Some will say it can not be done and it would be too expensive. I say it can be done, and the .cost of all the work would be offset by the value of the land reclaimed. Even if it takes 20 to 50 years, that land could be of very high value. The town planners could plan the whole area, long before there are houses scattered everywhere. The view from Mount Pleasant could be something to be proud of.—Yours, etc., R. E. MACDONALD.
