Notes From Department

SECONDARY ROLLS On July 1, 1964, there were 153,641 children in State and private secondary schools in New Zealand, according to part 1 of “Education Statistics of New Zealand” published recently by the Department of Education. This figure shows an increase since 1960 of 34,302 or 28.7 per cent. Over the same four-year period, there has been an increase in the proportion of children who remain at school

for more than three years. In 1960, of the 119,349 children in secondary schools, 15,326 or 12.8 per cent remained for more than three years; and in 1964, of the 153,641 children receiving secondary education 26,247, or more than 17 per cent, stayed at school for fourth or subsequent years. WORLD FORUM

This year an American newspaper, the “New York Herald Tribune,” is sponsoring its third world youth forum. New Zealand has again been asked to send a senior secondary school pupil as a delegate. The student who is selected will be required to have fluency in written expression and speech, a sound knowledge of current affairs and a high standard of character and integrity. Final applicants are selected on the basis of their performance in writing two essays. “Why I believe that I should be my country’s delegate to the world youth forum” and “My country’s role in today’s world.” The authors of the best essays are interviewed by. a panel which decides the successful candidate.

A New Zealand delegate attended the first forum which was held in 1963. Although the “Herald Tribune” policy on the forum has been to vary from year toyear the countries which are invited to send delegates, the quality of the contributions made by New Zealand delegates to the forum has prompted the sponsors to invite New Zealand delegates to each of the three forums.
