Worst Winter In 20 Years
August brought to a close a very unsettled and rather cold winter—the worst in fact for 20 years, according to the Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport, The month was one of unsettled weather. Although total rainfall was only .75in above normal, rain was recorded on 16 days. There was also an unusual number of fogs, 14 being recorded.
The mean monthly temperature was only slightly below average but there were many cold days. Nights were not as cold as normal and there were fewer frosts, especially during the last three weeks. Sunshine (138 hours) was only slightly below the aver-
age (140 hours). There were several clear days at the end of August. Throughout August there were frequent outbreaks of cold southerlies, accompanied by rain, hail, sleet and at times snow.
The highest temperature of the month occurred on Tuesday, August 31, when at the Botanic Gardens 68.1 degrees was recorded. At the airport it was 65.4 degrees F. The lowest temperature occurred on August 7 when 27.8 degrees was recorded at the Botanic Gardens and 27 degrees at the airport.
