Trouble With Transport On Sark
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Aug. 26. The Island of Sark—where cars are not allowed—is facing a transport crisis. Cars have been banned on the island, and the 510 residents and thousands of tourists, rely on about 50 horsedrawn carriages or bicycles. But some n* the carriages are wearing out, and the ruler
of Sark, Dame Sibyl Hathaway, fears for her island’s transport system. “It is proving hard to replace them. There appears to be no firm manufacturing this ■ sort of thing now. “So unless we locate some old ones lying around some--1 where or other, we shall soon ' have a crisis on our hands.” A solution might be to get ■ cars, but the 81-year-old Dame of Sark says: ‘The whole > beauty of Sark is its tranquil- ' ity. Once cars are permitted ’ this would end.” Would cars ever be allowed? “Not in my lifetime,” she said.
