Code Names For Reports
Code n&mes that can be identified with New Zealand tourist attractions will be used bn New Zealand-bound aircraft in a new system of reporting their positions. The Civil Aviation Department says that aircraft flying from Sydney to Christchurch, for example, will report at such points as chair-lift,
glacier, and snowfield, instead of giving route details, longitude and latitude, and other information.
The department says that this opportunity to mention New Zealand tourist attractions on international air route maps came about at a recent meeting of the International Aviation Organisation held in Vancouver. It
recommended that reporting points on international routes be designated by code name instead of by route details, latitude, and longitude at the time of reporting. The use of code names gives brief, positive identification of reporting points, and New Zealand and Australia have adopted the system for the Tasman and Pacific routes. New international charts for these routes will give the new designations, and will be used by all overseas airlines operating on New Zealand and Australian routes.
When the Civil Aviation Department decided to seek code names that could be identified with New Zealand, it asked the Tourist and Publicity Department for suggestions.
A list of about 400 words was submitted by the department’s publicity staff. From these 24 required were chosen. They are, in addition to those shown above, surfboard, sail-boat, aquaplane, blowhole, crater lake, lava, silver fern, waterfall, greenstone, and cascade. For reporting points on routes to and near Australia, the Australian Department of Civil Aviation chose a series all bearing the names of fish.
