TO MEASURE AIR POLLUTION.—This balloon, filled with gas, is ready to fly over the English town of Bedford to measure the degree of air pollution in the area. It can fly to a height of 500ft, and is fitted with instruments attached at 50ft intervals to its tethering line. In the town centre, 18 more instruments will be fitted to lamp standards. It is part of an experiment being conducted by the Ministry of Technology at the Warren Spring laboratory, Stevenage.
