Malaysia And Singapore
Sir, —R. S. Wheeler’s statements regarding Malaysia and Singapore and his inference of British exploitation of Chinese coolies indicates that his knowledge of the history of these areas is somewhat superficial. Chinese coins found in excavating at Singapore date from the tenth and eleventh centuries. The earlier is that of the Emperor Ching-chung of the dynasty of Sung-chao, who died in the year 967; another is of the ifeign of Jin-chung of the same dynasty, who died in 1067. A third is of the Emperor Shinchung, his successor, who died in 1085. Could it be that the coolies of that date were imported by the British?— Yours, etc., CHIPS. August 27, 1965.
