Sea Pollution
Sir,—Recently an article in “The Press” alarmed a good many people by drawing attention to the dangerous extent to which the sea has become polluted. A scientist had done research on it, and reported, and we all sat up and took notice. Now for many years, the Compost Society has warned us of the danger of pollution, including D.D.T.. in rivers, but how many of us have taken enough notice of this to prevent it? As rivers run into the sea, it would seem, none of us. Must we always wait for the expert, the scientist, to shut the stable door for us when the naturalist, common-sense layman, and “health crank” have pointed out the departing horse years ago? At least it is gratifying to find that scientists have “discovered” some facts of which practical people and even artists have been aware for years.—Yours, etc., A. A. DEANS. Peel Forest, August 26, 1965.
