Call For Symposium On Meat Requirements
r pHE opinion that a symposium on meat should be held in New Zealand such as that planned in Australia is held by Mr 11. A. Seifert, a spokesman for New Zea-land-owned meat export freez ing companies.
“The Meat the Customer Wants” is the subject of the Australian symposium, sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and the Australian Meat Board, which will be held in Melbourne on September 15, the day before the Royal show. Speakers will include producers of beef and lamb, studstock breeders, .neat works management and exporters, and wholesale and retail butchers. All Royal agricultural societies, federally con-
stituted producer, processing, and marketing organisations, and breed societies are invited to send delegates. “It might be asked why New Zealand should Stage such a symposium when we are selling our meat very well at present,” observes Mr Seifert. “That is an attitude of complacency which we cannot afford in a competitive world and one seeking ever leaner ineat. The very bounty of our pastures creates a grave problem of excess fat. This underlines the urgent need for a comprehensive study of meat the customer wants. There should be ample time for such a symposium to be held here before the New Zealand Royal show in Palmerston North in early November.” he said.
