Discount Service For The Aged
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 27. A discount service for oldage pensioners has been organised by more than 250 Auckland firms and the Senior Citizens’ Entertainment Club. More than 3000 pensioners have taken advantage of the service since it began in July. Discounts from 5 per cent to 50 per cent have been offered on many goods except food and cigarettes. Pensioners may use the discount service for clothes, hardware, furniture, electrical goods, drycleaning, hairdressing and many other goods and services.
Shops in the scheme are as far south as Pukekohe, in the central city area, in the western suburbs out to New Lynn, and on the North Shore in Birkenhead, Northcote, Devonport, Takapuna and Milford. The idea of the discount scheme came from the president of the club (Mr J. H. Poultney). Mr Poultney said pensioners over 60 and some universal superannuitants were eligible. They did not have to belong to an association. Pensioners would be issued with a discount book and a card with their names on it. The books would be issued free to the poorest people, while others would pay 2s 6d to cover the cost of printing. He said: “I believe this service will be equal to a 15 to 20 per cent increase in pension to many people.”
