August 29. COBB & Co.—The mail coach which left Christchurch this morning conveyed thirty-two passengers en route for Hokitika. Such evidence of a desire to make Christchurch the starting point, even at the present time when a considerable portion of the distance has to be traversed on foot shows plainly what may be expected when the road is completed, and no doubt Messrs Cole and Co. will be found as able to carry out the necessary details for a large passenger traffic as they have been energetic in establishing this present line.

MELVILLE HOUSE Miss Paynter wishes for a few Daily Pupils to Educate. The Misses Paynter’s accommodation admits of the reception of pupils without in any way interfering with the visitors boarding in Melville House. Tripp, Esq. The Misses Paynter give lessons in Woodcarving, Illuminating Drawing, in the Art of making Wax and French Paper Flowers, Decalcomania, Embroidery, and Fancy work of all kinds.
