MR REED IN SYDNEY
Enthusiastic Welcome (Special Crspdt. N.Z PA.f SYDNEY, August 26. There have been bigger receptions at the Kingsford Smith International Airport in Sydney, and there have been wilder scenes, with airport police tripping over themselves trying to keep back screaming fans, but there has not been a more enthusiastic reception than newspaper, radio and television representatives gave Mr A. H. Reed today. Mr Reed, New Zealand’s best-known pedestrian, arrived today to begin preparations for a 650-mile walk to Melbourne next week to celebrate his approaching 90th birthday. He went on four separate walks along airpor' roads to I have “on the hoof” int .(• views with representatives of Sydney television stations and then walked off for the city. The television representatives were to have interviewed him on his walk into the city, but decided against it because of traffic problems it could have caused. Mr Reed, who has written books about walks fr>m North Cape to Bluff and from west to east across tie North Island, intends to write a book on his Sydney-Melbourne walk. “I write books about all my long walks—l like to take people with me this way,” he said.
