TELEPHONE EXCHANGES
Conducted Tours Next Week Twelve Christchurch telephone exchanges will be open to the public for conducted tours next week. The tours will be held from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 pm. The exchanges to be opened to the public are Christchurch Central, Beckenham. Fendalton, Hillmorton, Linwood, Mt. Pleasant, New Brighton, Papanui, Riccarton, St. Albans, Shirley and Kaiapoi. Individual groups will be shown over the suburban and Kaiapoi exchanges, but visitors to Christchurch Central will be asked to join hourly tours. They will assemble on each hour in the Motor Registration office in Hereford street.
The divisional equipment engineer (Mr E. G. Harris) said yesterday that unattended young children could cause problems because of the dangerous nature of some of the equipment. “We prefer that no unaccompanied children under the age of 12 join the tours.” Mr Harris said the main reason for the tours was to give the public a better understanding of the complex equipment which served the telephone subscriber.
