Wheat Research Levy Will Have Maximum
Although it had been hoped that no limit would be put on the levy for wheat research to be fixed in new legislation, this had not been allowed, said the chairman (Professor J. Packer) at a meeting of the Wheat Research Committee. The director of the Wheat Research Institute (Mr R. W. Cawley) said that the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr Tallboys) had agreed to no limit being fixed in the proposed levy, but he had been over-ruled by the legislative committee. The committee’s general manager (Mr L. C. Dunshea) said that the proposed range from 6d (the present levy) to Is 6d allowed plenty of room for adjustment in future. The committee agreed not to oppose payment of 2] per cent commission to members of the New Zealand Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants’ Association for collecting the levy from wheatgrowers. Professor Packer reported that new wheat research regulations were proposed. At pre-
sent their effect would be to bring the institute under the National Research Advisory Committee and to leave to the Minister the right to appoint representatives of the wheatgrowers, millers, bakers and merchants.
The committee decided that it wished the regulations to be framed so that it remained a comimttee of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Retention of the present regulation permitting the groups to appoint their own representatives was also wanted.
