Club Wants A Younger Support
(From Our Own Reporter)
ASHBURTON. The Ashburton County Racing Club at its annual meeting yesterday amended its rules in an effort to encourage younger persons in the community to attend its race meetings. A motion by Mr R. J. Mulligan that two rules be amended to provide for a reduced subscription for persons 21 years of age and under 25 years, and that no entrance fee be payable by these members on joining the club, was carried unanimously by members. In his address the chairman (Mr W. R. Lemon) said that with greater competition from other sports fewer young persons were taking an interest in racing. He hoped that Mr Mulligan’s motion would increase interest in the club and in horse racing among this section of the community.
The reduced numbers of young persons attending race meetings was most noticeable, and if their interest could be attracted the dub and sport would benefit considerably, said Mr Lemon. Mr J. H. Grigg said that any move by the club to induce younger persons to attend race meetings Should be encouraged. Mr Lemon said he considered that quite a number of young persons would become interested in the sport and attend regularly once they were posted tickets, which was one of the privileges of membership. Election Of Officers
Mr N. Robilliard was reelected as the dub’s honorary time-keeper. Officers elected at a committee meeting after the annual meeting were:
President, Mr J. H. Grigg (re-elected); vice-president, Mr R. J. Mulligan (re-elec-ted); chairman of committee, Mr W. R. Lemon (re-elected); treasurer, Mr A. J. Mason.
