PLANS FOR MANTOVANI
Tasman Trip Likely “The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Mantovani’s decisive victory in the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday has more than likely earned him a trip to Melbourne this spring. Mantovani, which is raced by the Winters Bros, at Hobsonville, has been entered for the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup, and the George Adams Handicap at the V.R.C. spring meeting. “I have not finalised plans yet,” said a part-owner of the gelding, Mr E. Winters, yesterday, “but we would love to take Mantovani to Australia. Allan (Mr E. Winters’ brother, who has the other share in the horse) and I have a few commitments at home, but I think we will go.”
If Mantovani does make the trip, and there seems every likelihood that he will, he will be accompanied by his stablemate. Wonderbar. Wonderbar, a four-year-old and a half-brother to Mantovani, by Able Seaman, has been entered for the Caulfield Cup and the George Adams Handicap. As yet the Winters Bros, have not arranged for a rider for the horses in Australia. “I think we will try and get a New Zealand rider if we go across,” said Mr E. Winters. In the meantime Mantovani will start in the August Han. dicap, one mile, at Ellerslie on Saturday. “He might then start in the Avondale Cup,"- said Mr E. Winters, “but that will depend oil what weight he receives.”
