(New Zealand Press Association)
ROTORUA, August 25. A Te Teko hunter, Mr G. Johnson, told bow he escaped injury early this morning when a large Ceylonese sambur stag attacked him, broke his 131 b hunting rifle and tossed him into the air. “I was very lucky to escape uninjured,” said Mr Johnson. “The sambur’s antler marks are still on the front of my jacket.” Mr Johnson explained
that the animal had been bailed up by his dogs. “It could do nothing but attack and as I didn’t have time to shoot 1 thrust my rifle across its antlers. “The rifle broke, I was tossed into the air, and the sambur escaped,” he said. Mr Johnson is director of a tourist sporting holiday company which introduces many overseas visitors to hunting and fishing in Bay of Plenty.
