Facilities Sought To Match Production
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 25. The Government’s drive for greater production must be accompanied by better services to handle any increase, according to the Electoral Committee of the Meat Board.
Mr W. B. Trotter (Fairlie) told the committee today that he was concerned that the Government was urging increased production without ensuring that complementary moves were being made to ensure an increase in manpower, transport, processing, port and other facilities that would be needed.
If New Zealand produced more, then the trade commissioner service in potential market areas would have to be strengthened, he said’. Mr M. G. Hewitt (Cambridge) suggested the production drive had last its impetus. Farmers had to be persuaded it would be worth while for them and the country as a whole.. Mr W. R. Martin (Ahuroa) said that as the increase in farm production was designed to boost overseas earnings, both the Government and the people had a responsibility to get behind the farmer and “see that it goes.” The chairman of the Meat Board (Sir John Ormond)
said the question of utilising New Zealand’s existing transport and port facilities was being tackled by the Exports and Shipping Council. The establishment of the Transport Commission to review these services was in line with producer thinking. Improvement of services was vital if production targets were to be achieved.
