Power Charges

Sir, —Manufacturers are forever trying to cover up their deadness by shifting their electricity costs on to the housewife. On what basis do the manufacturers claim they subsidise , the home? Electricity in the first place is owned by the people as a whole, and is for the use of everyone as a basic necessity of life. If manufacturers wish to use this electricity in their various processes, they must be prepared to pay .the carefully apportioned rates and include the cost in their products. This will amount only to a small percentage of the total in any case. The M.x D. is a non-profit organisation for the city’s benefit, and has a first duty to keep the cost down in the homes. More power to Mr Olds.—Yours, etc..
