Synthetics And Wool
Sir, —I thank Mr Shelton for his answer on synthetics and wool consumption in New Zealand. I regret his answer is not satisfactory to wool-growers. We pay a levy on wool for sales promotion, then find Government policy of import control is restricting the consumption of wool in the Dominion. He says a world-wide trend must have influence on the domestic market. Again, Government policy is aiding rather than hindering that trend. Is Britain not entitled to a better deal considering British industry buys over a quarter of our wool clip? Would the treatment Britain receives have any bearing on the depressed wool market? The Tariff and Development Board is to investigate aspects of the woollen industry in New Zealand. 1 think if Mr Shelton had sent a circular to a cross-section of housewives asking their views on quality and price of knitting wools obtainable he would have got the answer promptly with minimum expense.—Yours, etc..
