LOGGING IN JAPAN

Study By N.Z. Officials (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 22. Logging techniques and the machinery used on steep timber country in Japan may be introduced to the New Zealand industry. The logging superintendent for the Forest Service (Mr J. J. K. Spiers) and the general manager, forestry division, New Zealand Forest Products (Mr J. E. Henry), left Wellington on Saturday to spend five weeks studying Japanese methods. “New Zealand is on the threshold of extensive thinnings and it will be necessary to extract this smaller material from the steeper land now being planted and coming into production.” Mr Spiers said.

The Japanese have developed machinery and methods which could help in New Zealand.
