JAY AR BEATS ROBIN DUNDEE

Jay Ar came out on top over a high-class field of pacers in the Lightning Handicap. He received the run of the race behind Anarca Direct and fought on best in a desperate finish to beat Robin Dundee and Jacobite handily.

Anarca Direct set a solid pace, being followed at intervals of a length and a half by Jay Ar, Orbiter,' Jacobite, Peel, and King Hal, with Robin Dundee and Tactile next and Lordship three places further back after hesitating at the start. Robin Dundee led Tactile and Lordship up towards the

front of the field approaching the home turn, with Anarca Direct still led from Jay Ar, Orbiter, Jacobite, Robin Dundee, Tactile, Lordship and Peel. Jay Ar soon overhauled Anarca Direct and kept up to his work by D. Mangos he won by a short length from Robin Dundee, which came home well. Jacobite finished gamely for third a nose back, with a length and a half to Orbiter, a short length to Anarca Direct, two lengths to Tactile, a length and a half to Garcon d’Or, which broke before the half-mile, a length to Lordship and two lengths to Master Alan. Lordship lost about 18 yards at the start. He was timed to take 2min 34 l-ssec for the 10 furlongs from post to post. He took Imin Isec- for his first half-mile, and 2min 3 4-ssec for his first mile. Rothesay Easily Rothesay, a dual winner at Ashburton in June, heralded a most successful season with a runaway win in the August Handicap. Trained at Tinwald by D. L. McGregor, who races him in partnership with Mr W. R. R Cruickshank, of Invercargill, Rothesay is a lightly-raced gelding by Seaforth from a freelegged pacer in Ladylike. Rothesay was in the middle of the field until near the three furlongs. He then sprinted clear and led by two lengths racing to the straight. From then on he was never tested and M. Holmes allowed him to coast home with a lead of four legths. La Garrison, a slow beginner, was well back all the way. He put in a strong run from the three furlongs to finish second, ahead of Landlord, Heriot and Fury River. Seafield Scott, Lottery Song and Night Rocket lost ground at the start.
