St. Paul’s Ceremony
(N.Z. Press Association) \ WELLINGTON, August 22. A brief, simple service was held in Wellington today to mark the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the old St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mulgrave street. It was held at noon—the same hour that the foundation stone was laid 100 years ago today. The centenary coincided with growing speculation on the future of the now disused building. Special permission was given by the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. W. Baines, to hold the service in the old cathedral. It was ceremoniously closed in May of last year when the new cathedral was ready to be entered. Just before the service, the choir and the. dean, the Very Rev. W. E. Hurst, walked in procession from the present St. Paul’s to the old cathedral, 300 yards away.
